Overall Concept of Pain Management

PRE-EMPTIVE ANALGESIA
- Prevent peripheral and central sensitizations
- The ability to block or diminish peripheral & central sensitization that leads to increased pain & analgesic requirements.
BALANCED ANALGESIA:
MULTIMODAL ANALGESIC THERAPIES
Local Anesthetics, Opioids, NSAIDs, NMDA blockers &
Alpha-2 agonists

At Veterinary Specialty Center of Indiana we use multimodal techniques that provide a balanced analgesic approach while undergoing potentially painful procedures. This may be major surgery or simple procedures. By utilizing this techniques before, during and after procedures we are able to provide our patients with the least amount of distress or discomfort while at Veterinary Specialty Center of Indiana

Some of the techniques that we utilize are as follows:

Epidural Anesthesia

By directly injecting local anesthetics and narcotics into the spinal canal we are able to effectively manage pain to our patient's lower body.

Preemptive Narcotics and Sedation

By administering pain medications in the form of narcotics and sedation prior to any surgical procedure we are able to aid our patients and potentially prevent them from ever becoming painful.

Constant Rate Infusions

Rather than simply giving simple injections of pain medications we aim to keep the levels of pain medications at an even state in our patients. This is best achieved through constant rate infusions of narcotics along with other medications that will help block pain perception in the spinal cord.

Local Anesthetics and Anti-inflammatories

For some surgical procedures we are able to locally inject medications that can block our patient's perception of pain. In a sense we are "numbing" the area that we are performing the procedure. Other medications we inject locally to help reduce inflammation and thus reduce pain.

Transdermal Pain Medications

Another way that we can keep levels of pain medications constant in our patients is through patches that infuse either narcotics through the skin or provide local anesthetics directly to the area where a procedure has been performed.

Oral Pain Medications and Sedatives

Oral pain medications and sedatives can be prescribed for our patients to be given at home or while in our hospital. These medications can directly aid in curtailing pain pathways or help to reduce inflammation that can lead to pain. We can also prescribe medications to help our patients relax and rest better at home.
